The control panel has many different icons that link to various tools, documentation, and online account management sections.

Protect Directories is an cedant.com tool to password protect your site or directory.The Protect Directories feature creates an .htaccess file in the directory you wish to protect.The .htaccess file is a web-based authentication tool that will deny web access to visitors who do not give a valid username and password. This user authentication, however, is only for web-based requests and does not apply to FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or SSH (a secure shell program).

This tool also allows you to further restrict access to certain directories. Usernames and passwords can be set differently for each directory and you can have multiple users per directory.

It is important to note that if you delete the .htaccess file your password protection for that directory will cease and you have now opened your files to unprotected entry.

NOTE:If you use Microsoft FrontPage as your web page creator/editor and have installed the FrontPage extensions, you cannot utilize the Protect Directories feature.The FrontPage extensions require that you use MS FrontPage Manager to set up your password protection.
